01 / THE JOY OF LEARNING
Move the beads and discover the answer.
Make a mistake? Try again.
Learning soroban is full of small challenges.
From the foundations of arithmetic,
to calculating with an abacus imagined in the mind.
Each step is a chance to build belief in their own ability.
SIX POWERS / THROUGH SOROBAN
Every problem is a chance to practise six valuable skills.
We nurture these skills through regular practice and new challenges.

02 / MEET YOUR TEACHER
I started learning soroban at the age of three at our family school, founded by my grandfather more than 50 years ago. My mother is also a soroban teacher. Having grown up with the abacus, I now help children discover it for themselves.
Bringing the soroban education I received in Japan to Australia.
I want to be a teacher who celebrates every small step forward with each child.
Highest rank in all three disciplines, certified by the League for Soroban Education of Japan.

Understanding comes before speed.
We check each step is clear before moving on.
Learn how to hold the abacus, move the beads and represent numbers. Familiarity with the tool builds a foundation for arithmetic.
From addition and subtraction to multiplication and division. Regular practice builds accuracy across a growing range of problems.
Begin calculating with an imagined abacus. Each new challenge is matched to your child’s skills and goals.
In a world of instant answers,
give them the chance to think it through.
Notice a mistake. Give it another go.
The journey towards an answer is part of learning, too.
06 / LESSON INFORMATION
Whether your child is new to soroban or has tried it before,
tell us where they are now and what they would like to learn.
07 / QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Absolutely. We start with moving the beads and representing numbers. There is no need to be good at maths or mental calculation before starting.
We begin by finding out what feels difficult, then return to a comfortable starting point. Small successes help your child move forward.
No experience is needed. Simply notice your child’s effort and progress, and celebrate their achievements with them.
Beginners are very welcome. Competitions and examinations are possible goals, but we choose each next step according to your child’s interests and progress.
Children are ready to start when they can read and write numbers. Join us in Southport on the Gold Coast, or online from anywhere in Australia. Email us about your child and your preferences.
Lessons cost AU$25 each, with AU$100 paid in advance for four lessons. We will explain the payment options when you enquire.
